Prerequisites For Distance Visual Acuity Testing:
Steps for Administration
Scoring the Exam
- Tests must be performed in a quiet, well-lit environment
- The client should wear their corrective lens
Steps for Administration
- Place the Snellen Chart ten feet away from the client. The chart should be placed at the client's eye level on a clutter free wall.
- The test administrator should create a cheat sheet of the examination to verify the client's answers.
- While standing next to the client, ask the individual to cover one of their eyes.
- The client then begins reading the chart from top to bottom until complete.
- The client must switch their eye covering and repeat the previous step.
- Lastly, the client performs the exam with both eyes.
Scoring the Exam
- Each row of the Snellen chart has a varying numerator with a denominator of 20.
- If the client gets less than half of the letters correct on a row, then that value is subtracted from the fraction.
- For example, if a client answers incorrectly 2 times on the row for 20/20, then the client's distant visual acuity is 20/20 -2.
- If a client gets more than half of the letters incorrect on a row, then the client moves up to the above row.
